Philanthropy

Phi Sigma Sigma is one of the only National Panhellenic sororities to have its own independent philanthropy dedicated to our sorority’s ideals of selfless giving. The Phi Sigma Sigma Foundation supports the National Kidney Foundation, our charity of choice, along with other charitable causes throughout the year. The Beta Upsilon chapter has donated almost $25,000 to the Phi Sigma Sigma Foundation since 2009!

The Foundation supports causes other than the National Kidney Foundation, including scholarship programs for chapters around the country. Our chapter has its own scholarship dedicated to one sister each year showing academic excellence and sisterhood values. This year, our sister Kelsey Balimtas was awarded the scholarship. The Foundation has nation-level scholarships as well. We are proud to say our own Rachel Aguirre was awarded a scholarship that has helped her stay at American and continue her academic journey!

Most recently, the Foundation activated the Twin Ideals Fund to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Sandy – another example of Phi Sigma Sigma’s ideal of selfless giving.

Local Philanthropy: Special Olympics

Our favorite event of the year, Special Olympics Bocce Ball, is held each April on the main quad and is hosted in collaboration with the brothers of Alpha Epsilon Pi. Students compete alongside DC area Special Olympians as well as participate in the notorious dance party that continues all day! Each year we look forward to meeting new participants and reconnecting with past participants. There is no better way to give back than to engage!

National Philanthropy: National Kidney Foundation

Each fall, our chapter hosts Kickball 4 Kidneys, a kickball tournament open to the entire AU community, with all proceeds going to the National Kidney Foundation. This year our event included 24 teams comprised of organizations including sororities, fraternities, the Davenport Coffee Lounge, and AU Women’s and Men’s Rugby. Congratulations to the men of Delta Tau Delta, who won a close championship game and became the 2012 K4K Champions!
